It sounds like the Qt3 version you use has picked up a certain Qt style you did
not use before. Some of them behave as you describe in the menus.

If you want, you can try to start the Qt3 based version from the command line
using the command line flag -style 

Try "opera -style platinum" or "opera -style windows"
