Select All's behavior is strange, and sometimes non-functional

Hello!
I'm new to Opera on linux, and the Opera mailing list, so pardon me if this
is some obvious thing I'm missing.
When I try to use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+A to select all the text in a
textbox such as the address box or Google's search box (on their webpage),
the cursor moves to the beginning then selects all after pressing once more,
or the cursor just moves to the beginning, respectively. This is very
frustrating behavior.

Anyone know a "cure," if there is one?
