Opera do not work with Java using icedtea6-plugin on Linux i386, Debian Unstable.
I need to manually add /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.6.1 to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to
resolve library dependencies of /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
(for libxul.so and libxpcom.so). After adding it /etc/ld.so.conf (and runing
ldconfig) Java works in Opera!

I had similar problem in Chromium.

You also need to have correct path to Java in Opera config, but this
is mostly automagical now.
