It used to be that flash would not work if it found itself in a path
where one of the components is "netscape".  (Using a hex editor to
modify the single occurrence of that string in the flash player itself
fixed the problem...).  I don't know if this is still true, though.

I don't remember whether accessing flash through a symlink avoided that
issue.

I don't know of any other potential reasons for this behaviour.
