The X11 mode (and dialog) is meant as a simple last resort. I use it  
myself all
the time though :)

Yep. Known limitation. I can add this to my todo, but it is hard to make a  
promise.
You can drag frequently used directories to the left column of the dialog  
and add
them as bookmarks. Maybe that will help a bit.

You can not do that yourself. But again, I'll look into that.
