Yes, that would definitely remove any signs of OpenGL and thus hwa on
unix.

After a quick look at the code, I think it is an unintentional side
effect of a completely unrelated fix.  (I hate global state.)

I don't think there's any way for users to work around this.  OpenGL
support on unix is probably completely broken from build 1384 onwards.
