---Special Focus: Microsoft and the Opera Bork Version ---

When Opera 7 was released, MSN showed a page to Opera users with
visible flaws, which users of Microsoft IE did not see. Through
investigation, Opera learned that MSN was sending a different style
sheet to the Opera browser. According to Opera's CTO, Hakon Lie, "Opera
7 is explicitly instructed by MSN to move content off the side of its
container, thus creating the impression that there is something wrong
with Opera 7."

Opera retorted with a powerful weapon: humor, by producing a new
browser version entitled "Bork edition" after the "Bork, Bork, Bork!"
sound made by the Swedish chef in the "Muppet Show". When visiting MSN
(http://www.msn.com/) with the new browser, users see text in a
language mimicking that of the Swedish chef on the "Muppet Show".

The underlying point of this release was to demonstrate how browsers
can distort content, as the Bork edition does. Ultimately, the success
of the Web depends on software and Web site developers behaving well
and rising above corporate rivalry.

After the Bork release received a lot of media attention, Microsoft has
now rectified this error and shows the same page to Opera users as to
other users. In the future, what do you think Opera should do to thwart
this discriminate behavior from Microsoft? Share your views on this and
other themes in the Opera forums:
