You basically were faced w/three choices - decide not to use ver. 2.2, install it and upgrade at every snapshot that had a database change or be faced with the daunting task of line by line database comparisons when you decide to upgrade. There should have been releases early on with a certain version number (2.2.01, 2.2.03, etc) and as the project progressed release another version number with an upgrade script that could look back at your existing version and decide what database changes need made. They could have even sold the upgrade script ($20 donation) to pay for development time... that way those dedicated to Open Source idiology could hack away on their own and those of us whos time is too short could pay for the script...
