Well, I've been fighting with this one for a couple of weeks or so now.

It appears that the majority are going with (3)... including myself, as I don't have the time, energy, or knowledge to do (1) or (2).

What I'd really like to see is some sort of Admin page function where you can add fields to whatever table is relevant, or even add in new tables as is required. But knowing the complexity of this I doubt it will happen. I certainly don't have the patience or skills to bring it into being!

If you're only creating a shop for yourself, then I wouldn't worry about it. If you're planning on setting up others based on your modifications, well, then it gets interesting as every shop will be a custom job depending on what changes you make to the database.

Oh, and if you go with (3) watch out for all the contribs and changes in the code! I already got stomped when I did some product field changes and then integrated a contrib which created fields of the same names. That one took a couple hours of head-scratching to figure out.

If you go with (1) or (2) be sure to add it to the contributions!
