I have done a little more digging here and it looks like session handeling on PHP Version 4.3.2RC4 is broken. All works fine with a snapshot from the PHP 4.5-dev.

Maybe worth putting a sticky in Installation that there are issues with session handeling in PHP Version 4.3.2RC4 and it is not advised to use it until the final release where the bug will hopefully be fixed.
