UPDATE: My host still hasn't reset the permissions on the directory, so I had to change all the pages of the preexisting website to use a new images directory ("img") and upload all the images there. Also, in the snapshot that I have there is no "function tep_copy_uploaded_file" in general.php (or any line like the one mentioned in the CHMOD fix above). I gather that this code has been rewritten, but I still had the problem (big time!), and this fix can no longer be used.
