Development environment

Hiya All...

At present, all the mods/contributions/ammendments I try out on my osC site are either done 'live'  :?  :shock:  or sometimes done on another osC site I have access to which isn't yet live.  This other site will soon be live and therefore I won't be able to test ammendments on that site from that point... so... here's my question - please excuse the ignorance if it is a stupid qn:).

Is there a way I can get osC and php running on my local machine so I don't have to publish any changes to the web in order to try them out first?  I could simply try i tout on my machine - when it works, publish to my webserver etc...

Please bear in mind I am not a developer (just a wannabe!!) so not [i]too [/i]detailed tekkie speak please .... :D  :D  :D
