Not true again...

If you use an editor like ActiveState Komono (I just like Komono is all), you can add in the php engine, so you can preview them in windows enviorment, as one example.  If you add in the windows version of php you can set your windows enviriorment up to achieve the preview without going to the sever.

For a Linux or Unnix based OS, you do not have to go even this far, just set up the OS to handle this for you.  I bet you can get better answers from others on this topic, as it is not my area of expertise.....
