I number my attributes by 10s to make sorting easier. Also, if you add new attributes fill them in correctly for one product then copy that products attributes to another product or a whole category. Or, you can add a product with just the new attribute. Then use copy attributes on that product with 1 attribute to copy to a product or whole category and tell it not to delete existing attributes first.
