On the Help popup this I was hoping was a good explination:

But what is happening, is you have set an attribute to be display only ... usually this is for things like:

Select an option below
Pick a color from below
Choose something here
etc.

These are for instruction but not for selection on the attribute of a product to be purchased. To prevent the user from selecting, for example, the Size:

Select from below ...

Rather than a correct size:

Small
Medium
Large

The Display Only setting is made for the attributes.

If the visitor still picks the wrong attribute, it will popup the error in the cart for the option that is incorrect.
