Stock item in multiple categories

i was just wondering if anyone knows of a contribution that will allow a single item to be placed in multiple categories? the reason i don't just add the item several times is that i want to be able to either A) pull the item out of all categories at once, and B) update the stock for that item in all the different categories at once using either the quick stock update contribution or manually. any help would be greatly appreciated :)
