Questions re: Categories Pages

I thought I would do the research for him. Could the dynamically generated categories pages be displayed any other way than the default way? For example, has anyone found a way to put alternating colors as a background behind the category rows? Is there a way to display those categories in a table or something? How about increasing the spacing between one row of category names and the following row of category icons? My boss thinks that our categories look "jumbled". I personally think that they look fine, but he wants us to find another way to display them. I've looked through some of the other sites listed on this site and all of the categories seem to be laid out pretty much the same so I was just curious if it was at all editable... Thanks in advance...
