Products with user-defined attributes - possible?

Hi folks -

Two questions regarding a couple features I'm not sure exist (sorry if this has been covered before.)

1. Is there any way to allow a user to define an attribute for a product when they place it in a cart? For example, allow the user choose any old amount of money ($10, $20, $3000) for a gift certfiicate? Interchange accomplishes this by doubling the quantity field as an "amount" field for specially flagged products. Is this possible in (stock) osCommerce?

2. Similarly, is it possible to allow a user to customize a product upon checkout (or when they place it in their cart?) For instance, allow them to add a personal message to the card that comes with flowers..
