Hmm...have you considered that the color codes are likely to be very sensitive to errors?  For example, if you change a 4C to a 5C, it is likely going to be an entirely different color.  With a select box that shows code and color, that is less likely (and you can point to the original order so that the customer knows that it is his or her mistake, not yours).
