whos online error with a much larger problem

I have searched and found that this was a common problem so I logged into phpmyadmin to find my database has NO tables :(

I am trying to find if my web guy has a back up but how can this happen?

if he has a back up how do I know it will not happen again and again?

I am so upset, I spent a lot of time getting the shop live for this to happen on our first day live :(
