"Easy" Upgrade?

(in other words, how to import the products I have put in the old version into the newer version after I have installed it). The 2.1 installation that was provided by my new hosting service is not working correctly. Do I need to have other specialized software (or does the hosting company?) to make the newer version work? I've read through so many 'instructions' that just say "import your products and you're ready to go" or similar, as if one should have been born with an understanding of how to do so. Any and all help is much appreciated. Julie
