Accessing Attributes (basic question)

I want to be able to directly access the attribute data for a specific product within the code. Can any one provide examples of code? 

What I'm trying to do: 
- We sell a product. 
- one of the attributes defines a cost which varies depending on quantity. 
- as it stands the customer chooses the attribute him/herself. 
- trouble is they can (and do) choose the wrong option. 
- I want to use the product quantity to automatically set this attribute 

I'm guessing this is just a case of someone telling me what file(s) to REQUIRE and a line of code that I can copy and paste and muck around with.
