Product Image Upload

Can someone clarify for me the following

1) When I upload a product image, there is only one image allowed

This results in the same image being used for the thumbnail aswell as the image enlargement

Surely this can't be right?

The software auto-resizes the thumbnail to the size stipulated in the admin section however this produces very poor images (becuase it is a browser resize) and also does not compress the file so a 100K large image is still used as the source image on the thumbnail resulting in lengthy page downloads

Is there something I'm missing?

Is there a module I need to install?

If anyone can shed light I'd be grateful!
