Please do not mix the copyright and the license - these are totally different Things.

The code of osCommerce has been written by the osCommerce developers, that have decided to use the name of the project as the copyright holder. Therefore the code is (c) by osCommerce. This will never change. You may add your own modificatiosn, which are ofcourse under your copyright. You may announce that fact by adding something like "portions/modifications (c) my Cool Company" but you may not claim (c) over the whole thing. That would be a violation of the copyright.

The licensing of osComerce is something different. We offer you osCommerce under the GNU General Public License. Please read and re-read the GPL to fully understand the consequences. There is also the GPL-FAQ on www.fsf.org that will help you in answering questions.

Copyright and Licenses should not be confused, though I admit it is sometimes hard to understand the differences.
