Thumbnail Images

My client wants to upload thumbnail images  and full-sized images separately. ie: he wants search results and such to display the thumbnail images (with a very small file-size) and then when you click on a product he wants the full-sized image to be displayed (preferably without having to click the  "click to enlarge" link.)  

Any suggestions on how to go about doing this? I can't imagine that this is an uncommon problem.
