Hmm, no replies.
Well, I can answer part of my own question.
In order to manipulate the images, the /catalog/images dir needed to be made writeable - I used 777 for now, but the real fix is going to be to allow the nobody user write permission to that dir.

Once the images dir is writeable, you can indeed upload images via the browser.  But, I still don't see a way to use a reference to an already existing image in the images dir, or if you can use an external URL.

Replies to the quickbooks question would be appreciated.
