Customer comments repeating?

When a customer places an order and enters comments into the comment field the comments are being saved. If you do not exit the cart, and decide to place another order, the SAME comments are displayed in the cart AGAIN. Obviously, there needs to be a clearing of the comment variable immediately after the order is completed. Can someone help me understand how to correct this problem? Any help would be appreciated!
