Database backup causing internal server error

Hi all,

I've been working on my site for a few months now. As I add more product the database has steadily been increasing in size. Every couple of days I would use the database backup tool within admin to back up the entire database. A few days ago when I did this the database just got a bit over 1Mb using the gzip option. Yesteryday I was doing another routine backup. At around 25% into the backup process (around 10 seconds on my server) it returns an internal server error 500. I've tried using the zip option and plain sql option but no luck. I've searched for this error code on google and found that the error is caused by a fault in one of the server side components. I'm running Abyss webserver. Does anyone have any idea what I need to fix and how I can fix it? Anyone out there with a large database over 1Mb without any problems?
