error message: Sessions directory does not exist

I just setup a store -- The installation went perfectly except I continure to get the following error message "Warning: The sessions directory does not exist: /tmp. Sessions will not work until this directory is created."

I created a /tmp directory in both Catalog and in the main url directory, not sure where the tmp directory should go. I am still getting the same message.  Any idea what I've missed?
