I am not an expert, so do read the OFFICIAL website :

You basically pay a small fee £35 
and appoint some one within your
company /organisation as Data Controller .

Read the self-assessment notes and see whether your company 
needs to register .

All information held must be available for the named person(s) to
see.

Order processing does not necessarily mean you need to register
(otherwise all business transactions would require you to register,
and I am sure my local Pizza place are not registered :-)
