First of all:
Thank you for takeing the time!

If you get a chance to test with category counts enabled and post hrere, could you include some machine specs? And maybe some info on the no of categories/ products?
I am somewhat surprised the total query time is worse (allthough I don't expect too much of a performance gain with counts disabled). 
I know the queries are a little more complex, but there quite a few less of them.
