Home page not in catalog directory not working

Hi...I am trying to create my home page where the "top" links to, at a higher directory than the 'catalog', and want to incorporate the dynamic elements of the categories, etc, but am having no luck. I couldn't seem to find any posts that talk about this although I would think it would be a common problem. Any help would be appreciated. Right now all I get is a page that is blank with this code:
