I know what the problem is now.
My store is at  shop.mydomain.com but my SSL jumps to secure.mydomain.com

This is why I am losing the session variable.  I changed the link my google adword to go right to secure.mydomain.com instead.  Now it should work.

I guess I am going to have to get the SSL fixed for the right domain name.
