What is the definition of a 'visitor' in phpOpenTracker.

I ask because for my little site, which is not busy at all,
phpOpenTracker reports 8860 total visitors and 41503 page impressions
for the period from July 03-08. The number of page impressions seems
about right but the number of visitors looks a bit high ...

If I extract the unique number of ip addresses (or resolved names) I get
5570 different host names/ip addresses. This is different from the 8860
visitors reported. I would like to understand what causes this difference.
