I forgot to say that if you need to know what the unique key generated
is/was for use later, then your method might be faster since once you
calculate it you have the value and can then use it multiple times.

If you get the DB to generate a unique key then you'd have to estimate
which is faster, calculating the id yourself or sending off a query to
the DB asking it give you a unique ID and waiting on an answer.
