I know these questions sound stupid, but mostly the small things aren't 
set up right. so, please, don't be angry.

* does other software run on your installation (e.g. phpMyAdmin)?
* what errormessaging did you set in php.ini?
* is display_errormessages enabled?
* did you enable all required extensions for your database?
