Thumbnails and Pics don't work

I saw some ancient emails about a 3.82 beta where people were 
downgrading to 3.81 because some of their pictures and thumbnails 
would not display. IE would display the standard red X instead. 

Well, I just did my first ever install of pixory (0.5.3). ALL of my 
pictures and thumbnails display as Xs. 

Details

Win XP SP2
Tomcat 4.1.31 (existing environment into which I dropped the WAR 
file)
j2sdk 1.4.2_08

I noticed in my image tree that there are _error files in my .album 
directories. extrat_error and transform_error files -- all 0 bytes.

While searching through the messages archives, I found mention of 
a "log file" but I can't find any pixory logfile. 

This seems like the most basic of problems (picture application 
can't display pictures), so I know it's working for everyone else.

Any ideas?
