Status report...

Hi Joe,

thanks for the 2.12 release, it has been running now some time, and 
everyone visiting the site are mostly happy with the user interface 
and the "look-and-feel". Even if you for some reason would not 
develop it any further I consider todays version of Pixory as one of 
the best picture publishing tools I have used!

And then back to the questions and wish-list section of the mail:

Pixory is sort of built around the assumption that you want to 
publish pictures in chronological order. While this is generally true 
for most of my pictures, I also have some "best of" folders. 
Like "Best of skiing", "Best of boating" etc.

The problem is not really inside each "best of..." album, since I can 
reorder the pictures there, but rather on the top level. The total 
collection of images span over a long period of time, and since the 
top level sorts every album according to the "first date" in the 
album this does not look too good on the screen, and also gives the 
wrong impression to the user about when the pictures inside each 
album were taken.

Have you considered any different sorting/structuring mechanism on 
top level to handle such cases?

On a related subject: Since I (mostly) store my pictures in 
chronological order (often a new folder for each download from the 
camera), I name each folder as e.g. "2003-05-19 Skiing in Aspen". 
Then it is really easy to browse through them since they are sorted 
chronologically.

However, the whole folder name is used as the album title in Pixory, 
which makes the titles a little ugly. Also the date would not really 
be needed here, since Pixory sorts them correct anyway. Of course I 
could rename the folders, but then I get a real mess when I want to 
find pictures (in Explorer or in other tools).

My guess is that most people have more or less the same system as I 
have, using some kind of date in the folder name. If this is true, 
then it would be nice if there was some possibility in Pixory to 
define the title for each album manually. Maybe combined with the 
option to take the title from the folder name (as today)?

I realise of course that I _could_ handle this by adding an extra 
folder level for each album, having the date+title only on the "upper 
level" and then just the title on the (only) subfolder...

Talking about folders, you mention that you have avoided hierarchical 
(nested) albums due to the complications associated with these. From 
my (limited) point of view I cannot really see that such a structure 
would be more complicated?

You already have the "album view" (top view), and it seems to me that 
if you would click on one top level album, and then finding yourself 
in another (lower level) "album view", you could probably use exactly 
the same code as of today? Maybe you need to add an "up-arrow" 
between the "house" and the "index" in the navigation part?

Of course you would need to specify which cover photo to used for 
each "album level", and possibly some other parameters, but the 
general structure with your .alb files would handle this nicely, I 
think?

As some of my albums (e.g. our three week caravan vacation last year) 
contains several thousands pictures it is natural to use nested 
folders (one for the whole vacation and one subfolder for each place 
we visited), and this does not come out too well when "flattened out" 
in Pixory.

If you have the time it would be nice to hear your (detailed) 
thoughts when it comes to nested folders and their complications?
