RE: Wish List

Thanks for the link to the thread below, it is good info to know.  While
I agree that a hierarchal scheme has its flaws, as you pointed out very
well, let me play Devil’s advocate for a minute.  
 
Fact of the matter is that the vast majority of people now have to use a
hierarchy for 2 reasons. 
 1) WinFS does not exist yet, hierarchal organization IS the way most
digital photographers organize their photos 
 2)  Setting up a database, even by using prepackaged systems like Jasc
and Adobe Photo Albums, or Pixory when it gets to that level, takes a
considerable investment of time.  Not only to get it going after you
have many (in my case thousands) of pictures organized hierarchically,
but also every time you get more pics.  Hierarchy = 2 minutes to put
bunches, lets say 50 pics, in a folder.  Database (i.e. tags, keywords,
descriptions, etc… associated with the image) takes lets say 3 minutes
per pic x our 50 pics = 150 minutes or 2.5 hours!  I am speaking from
personal experience as I am slowly working at getting all my pics
cataloged (databased) via Jasc Photo Album, while IN THE MEANTIME, I can
still find them easily via my hierarchy.
 
I would suggest you use the same philosophy as I have.  As I understand
it you are working towards setting up a database functionality for
Pixory (ie keywords),  IN THE MEANTIME it would be very useful for the
client side to have at least a hierarchal option… seems to me that it
should not be to hard to add just the option that the client side format
be the same as the admin side except without the configuration
capabilities.  This would have the additional advantage of still
allowing this ‘backwards compatible’  functionality to those who still
prefer it over the database structure once that structure is in effect.
As for me, and I am sure others, even with a database, the hierarchal
structure will still be useful as a simple, quick, and pre-existing
organizational scheme, for the same reasons I am using both structures
in Jasc.  (which, in case anyone cares, is one big reason Jasc is better
than Adobe)
 
From what I can tell, it sounds like you are working towards something
very much like Jasc or Adobe Album, except web based, which I think
sounds like the perfect program!!
 
As I mentioned earlier, what I am really looking for is a program that I
can just install and point to my ‘My Pictures’ folder, no more work than
that, and have it on the web for non technical friends and family to
look at.  I have found you can do this with tzo fairly well, however the
drawback of tzo vs. Pixory is Pixory is just more robust, more powerful.
More specifically, Pixory allows access control and descriptions for
images, and of course Pixory is free!
 
I am sad to report that at this time tzo is the better solution for me
personally due to 
1) the hierarchal structure
2) ability to view both pics and subfolders
3) public access to all folders.
 
I hate to beat a dead horse, but I really think you should consider
implementing those 3 improvements as an easy interim step until your
more advanced, functional, and powerful ‘database’ structure is
implemented.  Off course this all may be a mute point depending on the
timeframe you are looking at for implementing the database structure,
however; even in the case the database structure is coming soon, the
hierarchal structure’s ‘backwards compatibility’ for those who prefer it
over databases and/or use in conjunction with a database for speed (when
I come home with 50 new pics and don’t have the couple of hours to index
it into my database for the next few weeks) would still be BIG
advantages.  The exact same advantages that I feel Jasc is superior to
Adobe, flexabilty to do it the way I WANT, not the way the developer
thinks I should :-)  No offence intended.
 
Don’t get me wrong, I think a database structure is the way to go, but
have the dual functionality is a good thing.
Don’t get me wrong regarding Pixory either, I am just playing Devil’s
Advocate (mostly), I think it is fabulous program with real potential,
and for many people serves their needs very well just the way it is now.
Congrats on coming up with a great idea and following through to
actually make it a reality!

Pic filenames on thumbnail page
Which page are you talking about? The 'Album Index'
page?
Ideally it should be an option an all the pages.

Yes. There will be a mechanism where you can easily
set this default. It won't be in the next release, but
hopefully soon after.
