Sure, 1..8 for the columns/page it is.

You are correct. Pixory does not set the "last modified" header on the
pictures. That is a "performance" improvement that has been on my todo
list since day 1. Even so, it doesn't make sense to me that the
pictures get loaded twice for each request-- your guess as to the
mechanism is better than anything I can come up with (a proxy that is
just smart enough to be dangerous). All of the "icons" should be
treated the same. If they are not all the same, then you've found a
bug, and I'll look into it.
