I think that it would be nice if any international characters did work
OK, but given the situation today when it comes to Unicode and the
behaviour of different operating systems you might find yourself into
a full-time task just to fix this. Even the old 8.3-limitation of DOS
could in principle fuck up things on some old clients even without any
strange characters in the file name.

I think that the important thing is not really to get the correct
filenames, but to be able to extract the downloaded archive. Thus you
could just rename files during zipping and change all "potentially
bad" characters (all except [0-9A-za-z_.-] and maybe some more) to an
"x" or something like that. If you need to send the "whole directory"
to your zip-utility I guess you can create a temporary copy with
renamed files.

To get rid of the problem with possibly identical names you could
consider adding a sequence number as a prefix to every file name. This
also has the advantage that the downloaded file names will be sorted
in the same way as when looking at the album through Pixory (at least
if you have a fixed-size prefix; say 4 digits).

Thus the file name "my åäöÅÄÖ.jpg" will be "0001_my_xxxxxx.jpg". You
could even consider giving the user the option to exclude the file
names when downloading, and just get the sequence number part (i.e.
"0001.jpg" in my example above). This must then surely work on every
client?
