Gil, Great suggestion. Under Management->Group Settings->Messages->Posting and Archives->Moderation, I've selected "New Members". I'm assuming that now only the posts of "new" members will be subject to moderation. It appears that spam to the pixory-beta group usually comes from people who have just joined (same day, or same hour).
