Supporting old fashion POPS/SMTPS is pretty straightforward if you are
using JavaMail:

That said, using a dedicated port number to run SSL is now obsolete and
has been supersede by STARTTLS [1].
The GNU Free Software Foundation provides a good alternative to
JavaMail:
http://www.gnu.org/software/classpathx/javamail/javamail.html
They also have a pretty comprehensible network library which provide a
more direct access to all those protocols:
http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath/inetlib.html
