Sorry for the delay-- I was laid low by a cold/flu.

The log file is helpful, but not quite helpful enough. One of the log
statements provides just too little information in the critical spot.
So I have modified that statement to be more revealing, and this new
behaviour will be available in the next release, which will go out
this weekend. When 0.5.4 is available, repeat the previous exercise,
post the new log file, and all will become clear.
