Question about "SOCKS error: TTL expired"

Hello:

I am a graduate student from The Ohio State University. I am trying to 
do some experiments with Tor, which uses Polipo, on PlanetLab. When I 
request Tor's hidden service, sometime I got the following errors:
"Connect to dziqlnv7lelxtcng.onion:80 failed: SOCKS error: TTL expired"
Also
"SOCKS error: host unreachable"

I looked at Polipo's source code, seems these errors were reported by 
Polipo. So to deal with these errors, at least for the "SOCKS error: TTL 
expired" error, is there any way to increase the SOCK TTL value in 
Polipo? Changing some constant variable in the source code maybe?
