some potentially dumb questions

I'm using vista home premium sp2 , firefox 3.5.7 , tor ,  vidalia ,
torbutton , polico.

 

I have foxfire http and ssl proxy ports set to 8123.

 

I don't have a resolve.config file.

 

Config.txt is in the same folder as polipo.com.

 

Relevant entries from my config file are:

  cacheIsShared = false

  socksParentProxy = "localhost:9050"

  socksProxyType = socks5

  diskCacheRoot = ""

  censoredHeaders = set-cookie, cookie, cookie2, from, accept-language

  censorReferer = true

  dontIdentifyToClients = true

  disableLocalInterface = true

 

How do i know that polipo is reading the config.txt file? For one thing,
C:\var\cache\polipo\ looks like it's being used for caching, but it
shouldn't be should it, given diskCacheRoot = ""?

 

when i start vidalia, and then open firefox, the firefox proxy ports are
automatically  reset to 8118, which i think is the tor port. Is that right?
How do i know for sure that polipo is being used? I know polipo is running
because i see it in running processes. Also, i know that tor is running (in
running processes) and being used (tor check).

 

Then, if i disable tor with the torbutton, firefox ports automatically
return to 8123, but firefox says proxy is refusing connection, even though
polico is still a running process. Why is this? Can i do anything about it?

 

Fyi, i can run polico from the command prompt and then start firefox without
tor and it works, but i have to keep the command prompt window open.

 

If someone could teach me a few things, it would be greatly appreciated.
