No, Polipo is in the path between the client and Apache; it duplicates
the reply, and keeps one copy in the cache, sends the other to the
client.

Polipo caches everything -- there's no tunnelling path in Polipo at all.
However, it might choose not to used the cached value to satisfy a later
request.
