I'm talking about the box of sponsored links in the middle column, just
below the article. On my computer, it was an iframe with the contents of
bwp.zdnet.co.uk
When I visit that site directly, I get only text ads. See attached
screenshot.

You probably get something different than I do, but blocking that host
makes little difference here. Most obnoxious content is blocked anyway, and
most of the righthand sidebar stuff is not purely advertising, but links to
this, that and the other.
