From your report it's unclear to me why you think this is a Privoxy problem.

If Firefox stops using a proxy it's unlikely a Privoxy problem and
if Privoxy was really "unresponsive" you shouldn't get unfiltered
data but a vague Firefox error message.

To rule out (or confirm) a Privoxy problem, please enable the debug
directives suggested at:
http://www.privoxy.org/user-manual/contact.html#SUFFICIENT-INFORMATION
and provide a logfile excerpt.
