Thanks for the pointer Fabian. Reading through it's the exact same 
problem that's existed since Mountain Lion; a bug in OS X' user/group 
admin tool (dscl) related to user/group names with leading underscores 
(as is customary for accounts that'll not be used for interactive 
login). We _think_ we got to bottom of that, so I'll add info to the 
installer readme to explain what to do if affected.
